PERCEPTION: How the Way We See Ourselves Affects Our Health, Weight & Stewardship
October 26, 2026
Are you seeing yourself through your circumstances, your past, or through God's eyes?
Let's Talk PERCEPTION!
Have you ever looked in the mirror and wondered if what you see is actually what is there?
We all have perceptions—of ourselves, our bodies, other people, and the situations we walk through. But here's the question: **Is your perception based on truth, or has it been shaped by everything you've experienced in life?
Our past, our struggles, our successes, our insecurities, and even the words others have spoken over us can influence how we see ourselves.
And when it comes to our health, weight, and wellness, perception can be a powerful thing.
When Your Body Changes but Your Mind Hasn't Caught Up
I love Facebook memories! Seeing pictures of my kids, our family, and the studio over the years is such a blessing.
But recently, a memory popped up from VivaHealth Wellness Studio from last year.
My immediate thought?
Dang, I was fat!
Now here's the crazy part. Would I have described myself that way a year ago? Absolutely not!
So what changed?
My perception.
Over this past year, I've experienced significant weight loss due to ongoing health issues. This wasn't some amazing weight-loss transformation I set out to accomplish. It has been another storm that God is walking me through.
I've experienced life at over 330 pounds after an accident, and I've experienced being around 115 pounds because of health struggles.
Two completely different physical bodies. Same person. Same God.
And yet, the way I perceive myself continues to change.
It made me stop and ask myself: **How often do we allow our circumstances to change the way we see ourselves instead of grounding our identity in truth?**
Your Weight Is Not Your Worth
We live in a world obsessed with numbers.
The number on the scale. The size of our jeans. Calories. Macros. Body fat percentages. The number of pounds we've lost—or gained.
But when did those numbers become the measurement of our value?
As a health coach, personal trainer, and wellness studio owner, I believe in setting goals, tracking progress, and taking responsibility for our health.
But I also believe we've confused being healthy with being skinny.
Weight loss does not automatically mean better health. And weight gain does not automatically mean poor health.
Our bodies are complex. Hormones, stress, sleep, nutrition, medical conditions, medications, muscle mass, and life circumstances all play a role.
Someone can look physically fit and be struggling tremendously with their health. Someone else can be working hard to improve their health without seeing dramatic changes on the scale.
That's why we have to stop judging health by appearance alone.
What Does God Say About Our Perception?
People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." — 1 Samuel 16:7
Ouch! That verse hits differently when we start applying it to ourselves.
We spend so much time looking at the outside.
What do I look like? What do people think of me? Am I too big? Too small? Strong enough? Thin enough?
But what does God see?
He sees the heart. The intentions. The struggles. The obedience. The effort.
Psalm 139:14 reminds us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made.
That doesn't mean we ignore our physical health. It means we begin caring for our bodies from a place of gratitude rather than punishment.
We don't steward our bodies because we hate what we see. We steward them because we value what God has entrusted to us.
That's a HUGE difference!
Perception Can Change How We Treat Our Bodies
Think about this.
If you perceive yourself as a failure because you gained five pounds, how might that affect your decisions?
Maybe you give up on exercising. Maybe you restrict food unnecessarily. Maybe you compare yourself to everyone around you.
But what happens when you change your perception?
Instead of saying, "I've failed," you ask, "What does my body need right now?"
Instead of saying, "I hate my body," you say, "How can I better care for the body God gave me?"
Instead of exercising to punish yourself for eating, you move because your body was created to move.
Instead of chasing a number, you focus on building strength, improving mobility, eating nourishing foods, getting rest, and creating sustainable habits.
Same body. Different perception. Different decisions.
And over time, those decisions shape our health and our lives.
Stewardship Is More Than Diet and Exercise
At VivaHealth Wellness Studio, I talk about stewardship ALL THE TIME.
Because wellness is so much more than working out or eating a certain way.
Stewardship means caring for what God has entrusted to us.
That includes:
Movement: Building strength, mobility, and the ability to live our lives.
Nutrition: Nourishing our bodies with foods that support our individual needs.
Rest: Understanding that recovery is productive, not lazy.
Mental wellness: Recognizing unhealthy thought patterns, comparisons, and negative self-talk.
Spiritual wellness: Seeking God first and allowing His truth to shape our identity.
Community: Surrounding ourselves with people who encourage, support, and walk alongside us.
And sometimes stewardship means recognizing that our bodies need medical care, additional nutrition, a slower pace, or a completely different plan than the one we originally imagined.
I've had to learn that lesson personally.
Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is slow down, surrender, and allow God to guide you through a season you never expected.
Are You Seeing Yourself Through God's Eyes?
Romans 12:2 tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.
I love that scripture because transformation isn't just physical.
It's mental. Emotional. Spiritual.
We can change our bodies without changing our minds.
We can lose weight and still see ourselves as overweight. We can gain strength and still feel weak. We can make tremendous progress and still believe we're not enough.
Sometimes our perception needs more healing than our physical appearance needs changing.
And that takes intentional work, truth, grace, and sometimes professional support.
So here's my challenge to you today.
Before you look in the mirror and criticize what you see, ask yourself: Am I seeing myself through my past, my insecurities, society's expectations, or God's truth?
Because the way you perceive yourself influences the way you treat yourself.
And the way you treat yourself influences how you steward the life and body you've been given.
The Bottom Line: Change Your Perspective, Not Just Your Body
Life changes us. Experiences change us. Health challenges change us.
But our worth was never supposed to be determined by our weight, appearance, or circumstances.
I am still walking through my own health storm, learning, growing, surrendering, and trusting God along the way.
And while I don't have every answer, I know this:
My body is not my identity. My weight is not my worth. My circumstances are not my destination. And my perception should be grounded in God's truth, not the world's standards.
It's not about perfection. It's about progress, obedience, gratitude, and stewardship.
So today, I encourage you to look beyond the mirror.
Take care of your body. Nourish it. Move it. Rest it. Appreciate what it can do. Seek help when you need it.
And most importantly, remember WHO created you.
Your health journey isn't about becoming worthy. You already have worth. It's about learning to faithfully steward what you've been given.
Let's Talk!
Has your perception of yourself changed over the years? Have you struggled to see your body accurately after weight loss, weight gain, aging, or health challenges?
I'd love to hear your thoughts!
